We figured we'd start introducing our team more fully by starting with our Director Andy Barton:

Andy is a Bristol-based director, actor, and writer. As writer and director, his credits include the original productions of ChoniCargo (White Bear Theatre, London), Foresight (Courtyard Theatre London) andDen Preis Zahlen (Towngate Theatre, Basildon). Here in the southwest, his credits as director include Made in Dagenham (Redgrave Theatre), Night of The Living Deadline (Alma Theatre), and Lawful Kidnapping (Bristol Old Vic Theatre). He was also assistant director on the Rose Bowl award-winning production of A Christmas Carol (Bristol Hippodrome). As assistant director on feature films, his credits include I am Vengeance (dir Ross Boyask), Accident Man (dir Jesse v Jonhson), and The Hatton Garden Job (Ronnie Thompson). Andy is also the creator and co-host of The Absolute Scenes podcast.

Okay, so we all know the Pillowman is a bold choice of play right? Right.
It's going to take a crack team to pull it off and boy have we got one. Introducing our cast and crew for The Pillowman ✍:

I first encountered The Pillowman in an acting class. No context, no setup, just a monologue from what I would argue is the darkest scene in the entire play. Even without the full picture, I could tell that the writing was something else. It was the kind of text that gives an actor nowhere to hide. It stuck with me.

So when Constantine and I started talking about our first production, The Pillowman came up quickly. Not just because it’s a brilliant play (it is), but because it made sense: small cast, minimal locations, etc. But practicality aside, I think this play is a litmus test. It forces you to prioritise what matters. Story over spectacle. Substance over safety. You don’t programme The Pillowman to make a mediocre first impression, you do it because you have something to say - and because you trust your team to say it well.

So yes, it’s a risk. Yes, it’s probably not the friendliest first date with an audience. And we considered playing it safe - really, we did. Briefly.

But a gentle debut? Not really our style.

The first time I saw The Pillowman, I knew nothing about it. No synopsis, no context, no clue what I was walking into. It was a barebones production: no fancy set, no tricks (well…besides that last one. Iykyk.) Just four people on stage and a stomach-churning silence in the room.

And somehow, I couldn’t look away.

I spent most of the show feeling sick. Not because it was gory or grotesque, but because it crawled under my skin and refused to leave. Then - two minutes later - I was laughing. Ugly laughing. The kind you feel guilty for. That push-pull between horror and humour is hard to do properly in theatre, but when it’s done right it’s masterful. And two hours of it messes with you in the best way.

I left that show feeling like my stomach had dropped through the floor. At the time, it felt like a fable: abstract, unsettling, but safely distant. Now? It feels alarmingly close. The world has changed. Censorship, authoritarianism, the harm perpetuated by those in power in the name of ‘protecting the children.’ Suddenly, The Pillowman doesn’t feel like a cautionary tale. It feels like a warning we’ve already ignored.

So here we are. Starting our company with a play that’s haunted me for years. Not because it was flashy, but because it gripped. Because it demanded everything from the actors. Because it said: “This isn’t going to be easy, but it’s going to matter.”

🤍 Meet Jordan 🖤

Associate Director | Serial Entrepreneur | Fashion Icon

Calm, measured, and always two steps ahead: Jordan is the reason this whole operation hasn’t spontaneously combusted. With a decade of theatre experience under his belt, he has the sharp instincts of someone who’s seen it all and the authority of someone who knows exactly what’s about to go wrong and lets you find out anyway. For character development. Yours, obviously: Jordan already has all his ducks in a row, thank you very much. And they’re wearing tiny little coordinated waistcoats.

He’s also got a full-time job in IT, two startup companies, and (somehow) infinite patience for my 1am rants about the queer politics of Shakespeare. His brain is constantly running at least five tabs: acting, coding, intimacy direction, producing logistics, and fashion. Yes, fashion counts. A three-piece suit is casual wear. Pretty sure the man has a bedtime cravat.

Jordan’s the only person I know who can look me dead in the eye, tell me my dream show is artistically noble but logistically cursed, and still have me thank him like he’s handed me a gift. And he’s usually right. Maddeningly, infuriatingly right.

Exhibit A: 
“Hey Jordan, what about Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill?” 
“Constantine. That has fifteen characters.” 
“Okay, but it’s timely, it’s clever, it’s queer-” 
“And who’s paying to costume fifteen characters? This is our first production.” 
“…Fair. Thank you.”

I wind him up. He reins me in. It works.

This company literally wouldn’t exist without him. Case in point: I couldn’t even change my name in my iPhone despite not using my deadname in five years. He fixed it in ten minutes. My phone was in Spanish. Jordan doesn’t speak Spanish.

My most-used phrase? Both sarcastically and sincerely: 

Thank you, Jordan.

(And no, I didn’t pick the flattering photo. I picked the one where he looks like he’s plotting something unholy. Complimenting your co-founder means nothing if you don’t also knock him down a peg. Fair’s fair.)

Artistic Director | Coffee Connoisseur | Mortgage Guy (no, really)

Calm, serene, understated? Respectfully, none of those apply. Constantine is our American-born hurricane of theatre knowledge, espresso-energised chaos, and deeply held (often loudly shared) opinions.

With a theatre degree from James Madison University, actor training stories that frankly still scare the lot of us, and a borderline-reckless level of passion, Constantine doesn’t just enter a room. He charges into it. His enthusiasm is disarming. His sincerity? Unmistakably un-British.

By day, he's a mortgage adviser. By night (and on most lunch breaks,) he's the heartbeat of this company: equal parts dramaturgical depth and financial pragmatism. He keeps us bold, keeps us honest, and occasionally keeps us up at night with ideas that are juuuust crazy enough to work.

Oh — and the company name? That’s all him. “Minding my business,” he’ll declare mid-rant, “is my favourite [redacted] hobby.” 

Honestly? That’s a life philosophy we can all get behind.
